Thanks again. I installed the newest 4in1 driver pack 
from VIA and turned off DMA on the drive and it now 
works like a charm (or CD-RW).

I should say my mother did those things. I relayed the
instructions over the phone, so it took a while (but shorter
than two car trips). :-)

I do appreciate the time you took to answer and all of
your good advice.

I was wondering about that but I did
not try it as I thought the burner might
need it and it was way past sleepy
time when I was looking at it.

I will get the latest drivers and disable
DMA and see what comes of it.
