The issues with the 68LC040 are unique, though. The first 68LC040s were generally fine (but FPU-less), but there were apparently some bugs to fix. A new mask was created, which fixed some bugs, but it *broke* the CPU such that the vector which would receive requests for FPU action no longer worked at all. This means that if you have one of the 'broken' 68LC040s, you can't even run FPU emulation - under MacOS or Linux / BSD. If SoftFPU won't run, the chip is in the broken category.
