Do you know what port it is checking for the mouse?  In the 
/etc/X11/X86Config file there should be a line like:
   Device          "/dev/psaux"
Make sure that the device is set to /dev/psaux for a PS2
mouse (sometimes people use /dev/mouse which they link
to the real mouse device - /dev/psaux, etc.)

Anyway, give that a try.
