PPP Modem trouble

    Ok, I've been in a week long battle to get ppp access from my RH 5.1
installation.  I think my trouble may possibly stem from my pnp modem.
Has anyone else had problems with this?  I've gone through the pnpdump >
isapnp.conf; isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf stuff, decommenting what I think
were the appropriate lines, but how do I know if it's working?  I've
tried statserial, but it just returns an error.  Minicom also doesn't
seem to work for me.  Whenever I start it, it just basically locks up
and I have to kill the process.  Very frustrating.  I have read a vast
array of HOWTOs, FAQs, and mailing-list archives, not to mention the
newsgroups devoted to setup troubles, I'm not sure what else to do...

    Any help appreciated.
