sox and play

I'm having problems with sox and play:

I have the package sox-12.14-2 installed.

When I run 

play message.wav 

I get:

sox: File type 'ossdsp' of /dev/dsp file is not known!

I changed the play script to go to /dev/audio, but I got the same message.
What is ossdsp? I have a sound blaster 16 and my sound card works fine
(mp3's play perfectly, sndconfig works, audio cd, etc)
