Internet server (was: Why Linux?)

I used the IP-Masquerade HOW-TO to get my two Windows/Linux clients to use
the Internet through the modem on my server (waiting for DSL...HELLO
USWEST!). It wasn't too hard, and I didn't have to recompile my kernel to do
it. RedHat 5.0 seems to have it turned on by default. You may want to try
skipping the kernel-modification step of the HOW-TO. It will save you lots
of time if it works, and you'll know if it didn't. I like IP-Masq lots
better than a proxy. With most proxys, you can _only_ use the Web. You have
to install more special junk if you want to do mail, news, etc.

I had Dial-on-Demand working for a while (using the HOW-TO), but it seems as
though Win95 sends out some funky network packets that the server
interpreted as a request to connect to the Internet. If one of my clients
was running Win95, even if nothing was open and no one was using it, my
Linux box would spontaneously dial-up. There's nothing freakier than almost
falling asleep at night, when you hear the modem dialing in the next room,
and there's no one else in the house!! Anyway, I shut off D-O-D. Anyone
happen to know if I could make it stop that?

There's also a HOW-TO for getting your mail automatically using a cron
script, but I haven't played with it yet.

Good Luck!
Neal

One of my goals
is to try and configure my system so all the clients use the server to
connect
to the internet, and then also set up the server to automatically connect
every so often and get my e-mail. If anyone can help me with that, I'd
appreciate it.
