RE: [TCLUG:1267] Why Linux?
_________SNIP_________
Anyone have urls that would help answer this question:
"Why choose Linux?"
Personal opinions, experiences are also welcome.

I recently wrote an e-mail to one of the collumnists at Computer User, who
claimed that "computer hot-rodding was a lost art" because of the limited
access users are given to the internals of their OS, etc. He didn't mention
Linux, so I voiced my opinion. Lo and behold, it got printed! You can check
it out in the latest issue, free at numerous places including Barnes &
Noble.
I am happy to say that my SOHO file/print/ipmasq/ras/sendmail server has
been up for 60+ days, and does it's job beautifully (it's only a 486, too)!
I can't wait to get DSL...I want to upgrade it and start running a Web
server.
I will be the first, however, to say that I often don't choose Linux when it
comes to day-to-day desktop applications. X just isn't there yet. Linux is
faster and more powerful (as mentioned in a previous thread). One game of
DOOM will prove that! However, I just seem to to get more/better work done
in Windoze when I'm doing stuff like word processing, personal finance,
PIM's and desktop databases (MS Access). I'll sacrifice the power/stability
for efficiency-in/ease-of use. KDE and others are working to change that,
but after a couple of months of using KDE apps, StarOffice, Netscape, and a
few other apps as much as possible, I just ain't convinced yet. I hope it
does change, though.
Just my $.02
