at the LILO prompt -- if you have a delay..

type 'linux single' -- should boot you to single-user mode (you get a
'bash#' prompt without first going through a login script)  from there,
just go edit the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, and then type 'telinit 3' on a
RedHat system, or just reboot the thing...
