LVM is also beta quality - or so the kernel says :)

Also, you don't always have specific control of a vendor's software - which
in many cases may try to create files greater than 2GB.  A database server
comes to mind.

If your using over 2gb size files, the developer should really be raw
accessing a partition and using lvm to make the partition bigger or
smaller.
