Hi, Andy.

Your /etc/X11/X file will be a symbolic link to the actual X server.  To
use the SVGA server (the simplest) for instance, link it to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA.  There may be other servers in /usr/X11R6/bin,
depending on what you installed.  Try setting it to SVGA, if it isn't
already.

Next, check your XF86Config file.  This may be in /etc or /usr/X11R6.  In
the "monitor" section, you can set your refresh rates.  In the
"screen" section, you can set resolutions.  There is a program to automate
this at /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config.
