Also, I remember seeing that php had some pdf stuff in it.  Didn't look 
at it too deeply but that might be worth looking at. 

If you are gonna use ldap it probably wouldn't take much to set up a
perl script to process an ldif file.

Dunno.  Sounds like a fun project though.
Man, I wish I had more time.
