RE: [TCLUG:22757] Raid and other storage stories
If reliability is the primary concern, look at externally attached SCSI
RAID. Use something like a Chaparral RAID controller. It's an external
controller which will attach to practically any SCSI card. You don't
have to worry or wait for the right driver as you would for a PCI RAID
controller, which can be a big deal if you upgrade the level of OS. If
a host goes down you can attach it to a different box and the data is
still there ready to go. I've attached them to Linux, FreeBSD, AIX,
Solaris and NT.

If you're planning on using RAID 5 and need some performance I'd
recommend staying away from the IDE RAIDs. I've benchmarked them
against SCSI RAIDs and they weren't even close. It's been over a year
though, maybe they've gotten better.
BTW, I am biased as my company sells this stuff :)

Subject: [TCLUG:22757] Raid and other storage stories
I'm brainstorming (with myself!) storage solutions for a
Linux based X-Windows applications server.
What are people out there using?
Internal SCSI RAID, external SCSI attached RAID, NAS, SAN, ???.
How do you rate things for performance, price, and reliability?
Are there any things to be concerned about under linux?
I'm not looking for definitive HOWTO's, I'm just wondering about
the groups personal experiences and opinions.
Reliability is probably primary. I would like to set it up, lock
my office door, crawl out the window and walk down the tracks to
the bar every day for the next five years without any inconvenient
admin crap to do...
We all have our dreams...
