compiler warning

What does this mean
"warning : pasting would not give a valid preprocessing token"
I am getting is all over the place. It gives the file name and some numbers.

What I a doing is compiling kernel 2.2.16.  I have RH 7.0 and finally got 
it installed and running but I need to change the default kernel settings 
so I can use my CDRW which is IDE.  I installed the source code, it came 
with a bunch of patches and I tried to run a patch-kernel script and it 
didn't seem to work.

Any ideas anyone
