Well, I did some digging and found what looks to be a promising program
-- the Yellow Dog Update Program (YUP).  There's a webpage
[http://devel.yellowdoglinux.com/rp_yup.shtml] and a mailing list that
seems pretty new..  I haven't tried it yet, but the syntax is supposed
to be similar to apt-get.

Other than that, there are a number of different updater scripts around
(I found some at http://www.rpm.org/software.html)
