I got tired of fetchmail's complete lack of error handling (or the idealism
that it should exit if there were one little transport error), and decided
to run it from crond instead.  It doesnt run in daemon mode, and it's set to
download every 5 minutes (not likely ideal for a dilaout system; we're
constantly online here).  it works great, and even fetches mail often enough
to be irritating :)
