You can think of it as buying influence, or you can think of it as taking
on responsibility, and also as paying people good money to write free
software.

Be aware of the motivations behind your assumptions. Likening Red Hat to
Microsoft is unfair and unwarranted.

GCC is licensed under the GPL. Red Hat cannot close its source, and would
not due to the user backlash that would inevitably ensue. The end.


If you're worried about corporations co-opting free software, why do you
use BSD?
