Or have a really big amount of physical ram to swap.

Actually, that's not that weird.  The thing about the AltaVista search
engine project that was interesting when they started was that it was just
brute force -- the system runs with some gargantuan amount of RAM -- 10's
of GB.  Basically, the way they did it was to try and keep the internet in
RAM!  I don't think they did a lot of paging or swapping, but I do wonder
what they did to make it reliable.
