There should be no reason any 2.2 kernel doesn't support that size drive...
I have a maxtor 30g running perfectly on my Asus P5A (and that's using the
notoriously buggy ALi IDE chipset!).

The only other suggestion I might have is to try RedHat 6.2 -- 6.1's
installer seems to be mostly on crack.
