Tom,

It is faster than 16x..20x if I remember correctly, but this issue 'feels'
different than that...as my system hangs, the HD just chugs and chugs and
chugs, and after MANY seconds, it idles down and then the cd comes back up
again.  Your suggestion SOUNDS logical, but the bahavior would indicate that
I have SEVERAL MB in buffers, waiting to off load....

Personally, I think its an issue with a semi-faulty, or inefficient IDE
controller...But I don't know much about hardware.  I only know that every
time I sit down to use this thing, that I want to throw it out the window,
because its so frustrating to do anything with...
