ok, so I guess my recollection was wrong. (hey, it was 4 years ago! and I
probably ceremonially burned the notes it was written on as well..)
but Nick is right... real world T-1s don't move 1.5Mbps of actual
data... up to half of that figure (depending on situation) can be
communication overhead.
then again, burning CDs takes time as well. :)
actually, just realized that I have a copy of Mr. Tanenbaum's "Computer
Networks - Third Edition" within arm's reach here. :)
unfortunately, the index makes mo mention of "bandwidth", "station
wagon", or "tapes"; so I did a grep with a Mark 1 eyeball; and found the
quote in question on p. 83 (in Sec. 2.2). :)
the accompanying paragraph talks about moving 1000 7GB tapes (or in
today's terms; 100 70GB tapes) by Fed-Ex, in 24 hours. this gives a
bandwidth of 648Gbps. :)
