lpr Problems

Greet the sun all,

I am having a problem with lpr acting up.  The last couple of days I
have started to get the following message in a dialog box whenever I try
to print:

lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

If I look at /var/spool/lpr, I find the following two files:

/var/spool/lpr/lpd.lock and /var/spool/lpr/lp/lock 

I have not made any changes to the printer config and the printer itself
has not changed.  I tried removing them but still had no joy.  I looked
through chkconfig and I have not accidently turned lpd on startup.

Any ideas?
