RE: [TCLUG:14922] linux 2.3.99pre1 --rocks! (mostly)
At home, I am using 2.3.51. I built it to get the USB stuff working so I
could sync my Visor with jpilot. I noticed lots of goodies too. Like the SHM
filesystem support
nodev /var/shm shm defaults 0 0
Which seems to help improve perfomance and Imlib gets all crazy if you don't
mount that FS before you try to run things with use Imlib. The USB stuff
worked great once I read a little and mounted it's respective filesystem
too. My visor syncs MUCH faster on my Debian box than it does on my win98
box at home. And I think it's funny that there is no USB support in NT but I
got it in a devel kernel :) Sorry about the HTML on this mail btw but I am
at work and am too lazy to change it.
I am curious about the FB stuff though. How do you know if your video card
supports it? I have a Rage128 32 MB card. But am thinking it kinda sucks for
linux support. I am thinking about buying a new card (So I can play q3a
under linux) I know it seems silly but hey after hacking all day at work I
just wanna blow some people up when I get home.
I had the System.map issue too. Wonder what's up with that?
All in all I am tickled to death about the new kernels, they are very fast
and easier to build. My computer can take a real beating now and slow down
much which is nice.
