I was just going through the TCLUG archives looking for comments on the virtues of moving from lpr print spooling to LPRng. Is it a good idea? Looks like some have tried it and ended up going back to lpr.
I've been doing a lot of experimentation on using Linux with Samba/lpr to service W95/NT clients. I had everything working pretty good under 'lpr', printing to HP Lasers and HP Deskjets (via JetDirect boxes). I had enough little nagging problems that I thought I'd give LPRng a try, since I'd heard it had a lot of good features. Well, after (maybe not enough) testing I made the switch with these results: the lasers still print fine through Samba, however I can get nothing to print to the Deskjets now - the jobs just sit in the Samba spool directory.
Is there possibly a quick remedy that someone's come across? I mean, assuming that I had a correctly working system before, ie proper printcap, smb.conf, etc. I'm not really prepared to get into some deeeeep filter tweaking session till I have to. All I need for now is for LPRng to pass through the Samba jobs.
Is it most likely a filter problem? The lasers all work with the filter applied from the printtool utility for lpr. I've messed a little with ifhp, but nothing seems to help. From the server itself, I get the old stair step text, and I have to hit the FF button to get a Deskjet job to kick out, so I know there is a filter issue here.
Since for now, all I need is for preformated print jobs to just spool and print, is there some quick and dirty fix that doesn't require any filters?
Linux Server:
Mandrake 6.1
Samba 2.0.6-1
LPRng 3.6.12-1
ifhp 3.3.10-1
Thanks,
