Compaq SMART array

Trying to put together a database server using a Compaq Prosignia 500 with a Proliant RAID using a Compaq SMART Array Controller (not a SMART-2, etc.). This is an EISA machine with a Pentium 150 and 64M RAM.  Researched enough to know that Compaq doesn't intend to develop a linux driver for that array controller. Caldera Linux 2.3 doesn't recognize the controller, nor does RedHat 6.1 (just the SMART-2). The TCLUG archives had a reference to SMART-2, but not the SMART. Did find http://www.insync.net/~frantzc/cpqarray.html however this seems to be the SMART-2 driver again. In my current state of Linux newbie/wannabe, I may be overlooking a step here. Any help appreciated.
