I just finished grabbing the latest from CVS, but I don't think I'll be
able to get around to compiling it til the weekend. I'll let you know
how it goes.

According to the Evolution web page,

Several components of the Mailer have been written, but the Mailer as
a whole has not been put together yet.

I imagine that they'll start pulling it all together soon, if they want
to release in a month or two. Although I'm surprised you had to mess
with symlinking to get it to work.

Ditto, re evolution.

With GNOME 1.x, you do have to be careful where you put stuff. You can
especially run into problems if you have a mixture of rpms/debs and
source packages. I've had good luck installing everything into
/opt/gnome. Of course, that means I'm stuck with compiling everything
by hand.

GNOME 2.0 might be a little more forgiving about the install paths. You
can cover most of it with environment variables, but certain things are
intractable, like IIRC using certain API calls to get file paths,
q.v. gnome_pixmap_file().

It's not too bad one time through, but it's quite a pain to follow the
cutting edge. I believe there were a few automation scripts floating
around, but I'm not sure what became of them. If you're interested in
something like that, I could nose around.

Good luck,
John
