        there's actually an OS called EROS (Extremely Reliable Operating
System) that chekpoints itself this way. every once in a while, it writes
the entire state of the system to disk; checkpointing itself. if power
fails, or the like; it just restarts from the last checkpoint.
        it seems to be limited to some pretty high-end hardware (mainframe
stuff); but that can always change. :)
