I find this pretty hard to believe. You may have misunderstood (or they stated
it wrong) I have flashed mine and it still works. I use the USB stuff (as
opposed to serial) and install software into it with jpilot and sync all day
long. 

Now if I could get gnome-pilot to work... It runs like a daemon waiting for
you to press the hotsunc button on your palm like ruindoze does. Looks pretty
sweet, plus the gnome stuff is more aesthetic than is jpilot IMHO.
