There are at least two ways of doing this

*  edit your /etc/lilo.conf to include the line
vga=1
(incidentally, you can have 'vga=ask' to get a listing of possible resolutions
for your system)

*  change the console font to one that works at 80x50
In RedHat, try typing in (as root?) 'consolechars -f iso01'

Various font files should be located in the /usr/lib/kbd/console{trans,fonts}
directories.
