more routing weirdness
Hey *,
I've been working on that pesky routing problem. I think it's owing in
large part to my lack of knowledge of routing concepts.
Quick review:
Newly installed server is unable to ping anything outside its gateway. I
tried both suggestions offered earlier. 1. deleting and recreating default
gw entry in routing table *seemed* to have no effect (more on that later).
2. An entry in /etc/sysconfig/network for GATEWAY already exists an is set
correctly. Note, this should do the trick by itself. I've configured other
RedHat servers without setting the default gw by hand. Something is goofy
here.
Here are some more notes about the problem:
I've determined that the default gateway is actually present in the
routing table. The wierdness is that doing 'route -e' seemingly hangs, but
after some time (1-2 min.), the printout is very long and includes many IP
numbers that are completely unrelated to my little subnet on our WAN.
If I remove the default gw from the table, then 'route -e' works
perfectly. Recreating the default gw recreates the weirdness.
Doing 'netstat -nr' is quick, but it doesn't show the default gw. A
'nestat -r' has the same behavior as 'route -e'
Possible problem:
I think I've mistakenly started some sort of dynamic routing. Earlier in
the day, our sysadmin was trying to fix a problem that we thought was
preventing me from ssh'ing to my server from outside the WAN. He made some
changes to his routing tables in the process. Unfortunately, I'm not sure
what he did or if it would affect me this way.
I did install both gated and routed, but I've since killed gated. Here's
where I'm kind of clueless. I'm not sure which I should using. I've got a
rather simple network here. Static routing is perfectly adequate.
Can anyone give me some ideas?
