LILO works, still no boot

Thanks to Chris for getting lilo to work. I ran chroot /mnt from my rescue
disk and then lilo and now I have my lilo prompt back. But when I load a
kernel (any kernel, with or without the single option) the computer hangs on
remounting root filesystem read-write. Any ideas?  I suspect my /boot/map
file, but don't know how to rebuild it.

What does linux look at when it remounts the root file system?
