control line output volume

I have a SB64basic and kernel 2.2.5. I'd like to control the volume for
speaker and line out separately. How can I do this? (one for speaker, the
other for headphones). Also which is better to plug my speakers into? (I
use the headphones less) -- they both seem to be the same.
