I believe you'll want linux -> linux-2.2.4 instead. As far as I know, the
config programs are expecting that sym link to be pointing at the source
tree you're compiling.
Here's a kernel compilation sequence that works well for me (not everyone
uses the same sequence):
# make mrproper
# make menuconfig
# make dep
# make clean
# make bzImage
# make modules
# make modules_install
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.4 (for example)
After those steps, edit /etc/lilo.conf and add the settings for your new
kernel image. Re-run lilo.
# /sbin/lilo
and reboot.
