In the book itself (the Msg field). Some books are also created
randomly, such as the "The dagger of foo is an item of exceptional
power. It has the properties ... It's value is 5 times normal"-type
books, or the books describing monsters or some recipies. The
recipies, in particular, have a "bookchance" to determine the chance
of the recipe appearing in a randomly created book.

That's also the reason why most artifacts are not described in books:
books are only created for items the game knows about --- i.e. items
that are created via the treasure list, or something like that. The
book-creation algorithm looks at the treasure list, finds that helmets
can have "dark vision", and creates a book like the one mentioned above.
However, it doesn't know anything about dragonbanes or white dragon scale
mails.
