A short while ago I used to play on a MUD that had something like a pause.
If you were _not_ in a pk zone, or a few other areas in the game, you
would enter a command that would sort of "remove" you from the game into
an area that was a massive chat room/casino/meeting place/restaurant.
However, by entering the command again, it would take you right back to
the original "room" that you just left. Leaving monsters waiting for you,
if they were there of course.

Some of the other restrictions involved not being able to drop or give
anyone any item from you inventory, you could not use any spells in this
area, you could not regenerate mana or hit points while here as well. No
players could fight or any combat was allowed here as well. To prevent a
player from using this to see what is in an area, and then escaping to
this "pause room," all shouts/tells/party communication should probably be
blocked also. (See previous posts about having someone heal you when you
pause the game while in trouble.)

The benefit was an actual "break" for you since nothing could attack them
while in this area.

I am just trying to suggest an alternative for the pause idea, in case
there is a large enough demand for something like it.
