spells

I am having trouble learning spells.  I have an Int of 20, (Wizard),
6th level, and I know 4 spells.  Each time I read a new one (even
Magic Missile, a FIRST level spell), I fail.  Any possible reason why?
Spellbooks are expensive, and I shouldnt fail on something like that
