(ASCEND) MAX1800 and uucp

I have a LINUX server as an SMTP/MTA gateway between my Lotus Notes and the
Internet (uucp)
- the LINUX is connected to the Internet with an external modem using uucp
- the setup is based on sendmail and some uucp scripts

is there a way to connect from the LINUX to my MAX1800 to get rid of the
external modem?

what do I have to do with the sendmail configuration (I'm afraid of the
size from Costales sendmail book)

Any suggestions?
