SNMP is a good idea, one that has withstood the test
of time. The Maxen have SNMP traps that report
exactly this event (and others of interest).
There are even freeware SNMP managers out there,
but you have some reading to do before you jump
in with both feet. Try searching in the Ascend mailing
list for "SNMP".
