IP is a protocol :-)

An Internet based DSL solution uses an IP network. The DSLAM is a router
and the protocol on the DSL line is usually PPP. From the DSLAM, traffic
is routed into an IP network directly from the DSLAM.

Frame Relay based DSL, or ATM based DSL, uses PVCs (or SVCs?) from the
endpoint, which are switched via Frame Relay or ATM to some kind of
exit point. From there you can plug the PVCs into Internet routers to
provide Internet service, or into Frame Relay or ATM switches to provide
private network services.

The problem with IP based DSL is that it's not easy to do resale. You have
to use unpopular source routing to direct traffic to the right ISP for
the right customer. Also you can't deliver Frame Relay services using
a DSL local loop if you have a customer that wants this.

The problem with Frame or ATM based DSL is that you end up switching a
very large numbver of PVCs to a single exit point and you need a
dedicated aggregator box at that exit point (Like Redback's box or Ascend's
new product the name of which I forget)

I kind of like the TNT: you can do both (although there are serious bugs
that need to be resolved, but we're making progress!)
