(ASCEND) stable code for Max 4048?

Can anyone suggest a stable version of the software for my Max?  I have a
Max 4048, with 56K modem cards in three slots. 

I'm seeing the same problem that others have reported here -- dialup
connections with certain kinds of modems lock up after a few minutes.

If someone has the same machine (or a similar one) that works, I'd be
grateful if you could tell me which version of the code you're running.
