I kinda have to speak up on Motorola's behalf here... I've had the
Motorola 28.8 and 56K ModemSurfer external models... both have served me
without fail... I even gave the 28.8 away to a friend who was still using
a 14.4 when I got the 56K model... All I did was upgrade the firmware for
the modem (Which took about 10 minutes tops by the way) and I haven't had
any real problems with the connections... I get a minimum 40K connect on a
4048 running 6.0.2...
I do agree with you however in upgrading the firmware as the first
move and then checking the telephone lines themselves... and I would
recommend maybe having the lines checked a couple times by different techs
since I've found some ma'bell techs overlook bad lines and say they are
clean but other techs finding fault in the lines which line conditioners
fixed relatively easy...

Just my .02 worth... Now the Aptivas are another story I won't get
into :)
