Re: (ASCEND) Ascend being stingy? Fan cutt-backs?
Well, I got some answers today in regards to this, It seems that they
removed the fans for the following reason :
Ascend Said :
The reason the 2 60mm fans were removed is that they had an insignificant
effect on total air flow through the chassis but an impact on the acoustic
noise generated by the TNT. In order to pass the acoustic noise
requirement of 60dBA the fans were removed.
Just to be fair they also said the following :
With the enlargement of the intake slots on the card covers the airflow
through the system has increased by 35-40%. This allows greater air volume
through the slot assemblies. The TNT under went significant airflow and
thermal testing to prove that the small fan removal would not be
detrimental to performance. The present TNT has passed with significant
margin the thermal testing required by NEBS. This included ambient
temperature range of 0 to 55 degrees C ( 131 degrees F). Temperature
cycling test for three consecutive days (72 hours) where the temperature
would rise and fall quickly and then stabilize. I personally have tested
the current configuration of the TNT to temperatures as high as 65 degrees
C for 8 hours in our in house chamber and detected no degradations in
performance while in the chamber.
------CUTT-----
So, I guess I'll have to do my own testing to see if the delta of heat
rise through the box changes in regards to this new design.
hmm. (Always in my mind more Fan's = good)
