FW: (ASCEND) ISDN Connections to Max 4004

There were so many conflicting e-mails on this question, I thought this one
might help clear up the confusion.

The reason we are considering using a T1 rather than a PRI is simple. Our
Telco provides us with local access numbers all throughout our area for a
flat fee, rather than maintain multiple POP's. We want to use the same T1's
to allow ISDN. The telco is not sure they will offer this service for a PRI
curcuit.

If we can use the same T1 to allow some of our customers ISDN access with no
change in the T1, which is what I had asked Ascend about, we could offer
ISDN right now at no cost to us. We already have the Max ISDN software on
one box.

I actually work for Ascend as a Systems Engineer. I've installed quite a
few Max's to answer ISDN over a T1. This feature was put in place to help
ISP's who either couldn't get a PRI, or they were too expensive to order
just to support one or two ISDN callers.

As with anything, there are tradeoff's. When doing this "Data over Voice"
application, you'll need to work with the telco to have them set aside a
portion of your T1 for just these ISDN calls. The alternative would be to
have them set up a separate phone # and provide you calling information via
ANI; but somehow this never seems to get provisioned right from the telco.
In many instances, your ISDN data callers will also be restricted to
56K/112K calls due to the way the telco has provisioned your circuit.

In short, I don't want to scare you away from this applications, but you
should know the full story before you order a circuit. If PRI's are either
unavailable or too expensive for your return on investment, the Max's
certainly will work across the T1. However, if PRI's are justifiable
cost-wise - you will be much happier with both performance and support of
this application.
