Re: (ASCEND) Lucent -=-> Ascend --> ? (fwd)

Once upon a time Barry Hemphill shaped the electrons to say...
>Ascend. To suggest the purchase was made because they liked
>the PM4 better than the Max TNT is ridiculous - they may well
>have, but a little matter of 6-12 billion dollars might have entered

Of course it did. I also know that the fact that Livingston was using Lucent
HW entered into it. And that Lucent was impressed with ComOS and what
Livingston was doing with the PM-4. The Pm-3 was still rather new when
the ball started rolling, they were looking at the future.

>Incidentally, I seem to see you (do I refer to you as Megazone?
>what does your mother call you?) post an an awful lot of very

My mother calls me MegaZone most of the time now. I'm variously called
Zoner, MZ (em-zee), Mr. Z or Mr. Zone (a couple of folks at work), as well
as various and sundry expletives.

>negative comments on Ascend products, and you're clearly a
>devout priest of the Church of Livingston, and it makes me wonder:

You might be recent - I used to work for Livingston/Lucent RABU. I figured
everyone knew that. I work for GTEI/BBN now. (And Xylogics before
Livingston.) And if you read long enough, and enough places, you'll see
that I'm not always negative on Ascend, and not always positive on Lucent.

I do honestly believe the Lucent product is better in both HW and SW. It
does not have all of the bells and whistles Ascend does - and doesn't pretend
to. But what it does have it generally does cleaner, faster, and with a
higher level of reliability.

I think the MAX 4000 and TNT are lame ducks frankly, but I think the MAX6000
is a nice piece of HW. It is what the 4000 should have been. And I've been
hearing several good things about the TNT II - but maybe that's all bullshit
as Matt implied.

I have a fairly solid history of calling things as I see them, which includes
contradicting my employers when I disagree. I'm terrible at towing a party
line. Many times I've recommended a competing vendor when I thought their
product better solved the customers needs.

>why are you on this list? Not to suggest in any way you can't hang
>out here and say whatever you like, but it makes me curious if

GTEI's DiaLinx product line uses Ascend MAXen, I am involved with that
product.

Aside from that I'm on every vendor list I know of because I like to keep on
top of things for my own good. portmaster-users, ascend-users, usr-tc,
cisco-nsp, (I read comp.dcom.sys.cisco instead of the associated list),
computone, bay-isp, annex, telebit, shiva, inet-access, iap, isp-services,
isp-equipment, cistron, radius-users, isp-radius, and others I'm sure I don't
recall offhand.

>list), or more of a rabble rouser? Nothing personal, but everyone

Oh, I am a rabble rouser. But this is nothing, you should see what I've
been doing to 3Com for shafting their Total Control users over on usr-tc.
I'm not one to be shy about stating my view of things, and I don't mind
being told I'm wrong either. I guess I like to shake things and see what
settles out, it generally leads to the best discussions.

>else here seems at least half ways familiar with your posts (at
>least they don't seem to suprise anyone else), so I'm guessing I
>must simply be in the dark.

Same reason Kevin is on portmaster-users, and other vendors cross-list.
Keep an eye on what everyone else is doing, and also see what is being said
about your products in the 'enemy' camp.
