You are looking for the wanLineStateString variable in the
ASCEND-ADVANCED-AGENT-MIB MIB. It will allow you to read the 2 character
string you refer to. Note that it is in the advanced MIB, so your Max
must support this, and run software 6 or later.

The T1's appear to be numbered 2 and 3 (plus 4 and 5 for Maxes with 4
T1's).
