Upgrading system software to a fat or extended load 

1 If you want to upgrade your system to a fat or extended load, and your
unit currently is using a standard load, you must first upgrade your
system to a version that understands the new format. Start with a thin
load to upgrade to a fat load, then upgrade to a fat load. 

Standard (thin) Less than 448 Kb.
from looking at the ftp site...5.1a is
443 Kb

read the DOC for yourself.....I could be wrong...or right....that is the
purpose for release notes....may depend on what patch level you
have....not sure...my pipe does not need an upgrade at this point 
sorry if I added to your confusion...
