(ASCEND) Max Finger and FreeBSD - solution/query

I found if I do a finger -T @max1, it worked.... why?

man finger...

-T Disable the use of T/TCP (see ttcp(4)). This option is needed to
finger hosts with a broken TCP implementation.

man ttcp...

TTCP(4) FreeBSD Kernel Interfaces Manual TTCP(4)

NAME
ttcp - Transmission Control Protocol Extensions for Transactions

DESCRIPTION
T/TCP refers to a set of extensions to the TCP protocol (see tcp(4))
which permit hosts to reliably exchange a small amount of data in a two-
packet exchange, thus eliminating the extra round-trip delays inherent in
     a standard TCP connection.

As I read it, either FreeBSD is extremely advanced, or Ascend is not
keeping up. Strange indeed. :)

OK, this is odd.

finger a max on freebsd (2.2.7), and the max just hangs....

marquis: {29} % finger @207.230.251.5
[207.230.251.5]

for about a minute, then gives back the prompt.

finger it on a linux box, and....

beast:~$ finger @207.230.251.5
[207.230.251.5]
I Session Line: Slot: Tx Rx Service Host User
