Thanks to several who supplied clues to help recover. The unit is
running 6.0.9 now and seems to be working well.

Clues included:

  Jumper P6 near the CPU.
  Have the terminal set for 56K, NOT 9600. If you are using Hyperterminal,
    set the parameters, SAVE THEM TO A FILE AND RESTART HT. My experience
    was that the rate would not change on the fly, even though the number
    at the botton of the Hyperterm window will change on the fly.
    Those misleading parameter values have caused me a lot of grief.
    I assumed that since the indicator changed, the rate had indeed
    changed. That was a bad assumption!
  Apply power
  Use >EF
      >DF
  Upload new software. I started with 4.6Ci18.
  After restart, the terminal panel comes up in "normal" mode at
    9600 bps. Be sure the restart Hyperterminal at new comm settings.
  I was then able to follow standard recommendations to upgrade to
    5.0A and then 6.0.9. That was the last release I found for b.p50.
