Re: (ASCEND) Supra is nuts!

There is another issue here as well. As you are aware, telephone lines
operate within the first 4K bandwidth on the wire. To get more analog
phone calls on a single wire (up to eight) some phone companies send the
additional signals in 4K increments upward in frequency. For example, the
second "line" lives between 4K and 8K, third between 8K and 12K and so on.
We have found telcos frequently used this method to provide phone
connections to apartment buildings because it is less expensive than
bringing in new wire.

The higher frequency bands are, shall we say, less friendly to 56K modems
(or even 33.6K modems for that matter). Both signal loss and noise are
greater at these higher frequencies and the digital to analog conversion at
the telco is dirtier.

Our local telco has racks upon racks of these things. They are slowly
converting them to digital. The first digital units they got in weren't
even able to carry a 28.8K modem and they sent them back. The new ones
work fine for 28.8K, but we are not convinced they work at 56K.
Unfortunately, the telco can't tell us who is on the new digital lines so
we have no way of testing them at 56K.
