Re: (ASCEND) Supra is nuts!

You also might have her check the firmware on her modem. If it is v0.114 then she will need to upgrade it. I received this information from their tech support. I have been able to connect fine to my max 4002 with multiple versions of software over time. Here is how...
There are two major criteria that have to be met in order to
make 56K connections. 1) The modem that you are dialing to MUST be a
K56flex capable server system, and 2) your phone lines must be clear,
and clean enough to support 56K. If you are currently seeing
connections at 33,600, 28800, or 26400, then your phone lines may not be
clean enough to support 56K.

In order to establish a connection, the modem checks the phone
line conditions as part of it's routine. You can check to see what the
modem is detecting, by making a connection using MicroPhoneLT,
CommunicateLite, or Zterm. You will not be able to successfully log
on-line with these programs, but you should be able to establish a
connection. Start up one of the programs and initialize the modem with
AT&F1. Then type in ATDT and the phone number for your internet service.
Press the Return key and you should hear the modem dial. After the modem
finishes connecting, type +++ but do not press return. You should see an
OK in the terminal window. Then type in AT&V1 followed by Return. You
will be presented with one of the following: (the thing to note is the
Line QUALITY value)

AT&V1
TERMINATION REASON.......... LOCAL REQUEST
LAST TX data rate...................... 24000 BPS
HIGHEST TX data rate.............. 24000 BPS
LAST RX data rate..................... 26400 BPS <--- 26.4kbps
connection
HIGHEST RX data rate..............26400 BPS
Error correction PROTOCOL... LAPM
Data COMPRESSION............... V42Bis
Line QUALITY..............................031 <----- This is too
high
Receive LEVEL.......................... 016
Highest SPX Receive State..... 67
Highest SPX Transmit State... 67
EQM Sum Value........................ 00A0
RBS Pattern detected.............. 3F
Data Rate Dropped in kbps... 08
Digital Pad Detected............... None

AT&V1
TERMINATION REASON.......... LOCAL REQUEST
LAST TX data rate..................... 26400 BPS
HIGHEST TX data rate............. 26400 BPS
LAST RX data rate.................... 46000 BPS <--- 46kbps connection
HIGHEST RX data rate............ 46000 BPS
Error correction PROTOCOL... LAPM
Data COMPRESSION.............. V42Bis
Line QUALITY............................ 018 <----- This is VERY
good

If you are seeing a Line QUALITY above the value 25, then 56K
connections are almost impossible. There is nothing the modem can do
about this. You can contact your phone company and see if they can
improve your phone line quality.

After performing the previous test, if the line conditions check
out okay, there is one other thing we need to check. This is the
firmware version installed in your modem. To check this, load a terminal
program like MicroPhoneLT, Zterm, or CommunicateLite. After you have the
application up and running, type in ATi3 and press Return. The number
you see should be V1.000-03 or something similar. If it is V0.519, then
you can update with one of the flashers located at:
http://www.diamondmm.com/products/firmware/56k/macflashers.html.
If you receive the number V0.114, then you need to update your
modem to our current hardware version. To upgrade to the latest version
of hardware, contact Customer Service at (800) 468-5846 and request a
Return Authorization. Use my tech id# JL6819K. Your modem will be
upgraded to the latest SX56e board revision.
Your modem will be upgraded to the a modem with the V0.519
firmware or newer. >
