RE: (ASCEND) P75 on the internet: beginning routing question
I would assume the problem is one of IP routing basics. Your default
gateway for your network workstations needs to be the IP address of the
router. Thus your router will have a LAN IP address and an Internet IP
address.
You might want to refer to a good tcp/ip routing book to understand routing
basics. As a non IS-type, I will tell you that it can get quite confusing,
but not impossible <g>.

Subject: (ASCEND) P75 on the internet: beginning routing question
I have a P75 and want to use NAT to get on the net from my NT/win 95
network.
I have static addresses on both sides, including a static IP from my ISP.
the 0.0.0.0 route always comes up with no gateway, which i assume is a
problem. when i try to add the static ip address from my provider as the
gateway for that server it calls the route local. when i try to ping a
remote address the 127.0.0.1 address responds.
also, i can't get the router to dial automatically. is that supposed to
work in PPP? or just MPP?
i've read the routing 101 at the ascend site and searched around, but can't
quite get this figured out. also, my provider says the gateway on his end
should be assigned dynamically because it's subject to change. right now i
hard coded it in connections->name->ip, but i don't see it anywhere in the
routing table.
the only thing that does seem to work is dns resolution. as long as i'm
connected i can fail to ping things by name instead of address.
here's my routing table when i'm connected:
0.0.0.0/0 - wanidle0 Sn 0 1 0 1677
127.0.0.0/8 - bh0 CP 0 0 0 1677
127.0.0.1/32 - local CP 0 0 0 1677
127.0.0.2/32 - rj0 CP 0 0 0 1677
192.168.128.0/24 - ie0 C 0 0 4979 1677
192.168.128.124/32 - local CP 0 0 1611 1677
198.59.115.0/24 198.59.115.129 wan0 rTn 100 1 0 14
198.59.115.129/32 198.59.115.129 wan0 SG 60 1 1 1677
198.59.115.129/32 - local *CP 100 0 0 1677
198.59.115.129/32 198.59.115.129 wan0 *rTn 100 1 0 14
224.0.0.0/4 - mcast CP 0 0 0 1677
224.0.0.1/32 - local CP 0 0 0 1677
224.0.0.2/32 - local CP 0 0 0 1677
224.0.0.5/32 - bh0 CP 0 0 0 1677
224.0.0.6/32 - bh0 CP 0 0 0 1677
224.0.0.9/32 - local CP 0 0 0 1677
255.255.255.255/32 - ie0 CP 0 0 0 1677
192.168.128.124 is the routers IP address on the local side, the
198.59.115.129 is the address on the remote side.
thanks - Kevin
